I'm Kei Morita, the dental lead here. Rather than thinking "once the tooth is out, the job is done," I always look toward the life the animal will lead afterward. Let me share the philosophy at the heart of the dental care I provide.
歯科主任の森田慶です。私は「抜けば終わり」ではなく、その後の生活まで見据えて診療にあたっています。私が大切にしている考え方をご紹介します。
I believe that the condition of an animal's teeth affects not only how it eats, but its whole-body health and even its relationship with its family. Removing pain and discomfort so that each animal can eat and live as itself — that is the goal I aim for in every case.
私は、歯の状態が動物の食事だけでなく、身体全体の健康、そして飼い主様との関係までも大きく左右すると考えています。痛みや不快感を取り除き、その子がその子らしく食べ、その子らしく生活できること。これが、私が一貫して目指しているゴールです。
For this reason, I don't start from the premise of extraction. I dedicate myself to tooth-preserving treatments such as endodontic (root) therapy and periodontal tissue regeneration — approaches I learned from human dentistry and academic societies. Of course, I do appropriately extract teeth that have become a source of infection. What matters to me is accurately assessing the condition of each individual mouth and choosing the best option for that animal.
だからこそ私は、「抜歯ありき」ではなく、人の歯科医院や学会で学んだ歯内治療（根の治療）や歯周組織再生治療といった"歯を残すための治療"に力を入れています。もちろん、感染源として取り除くべき歯は適切に抜歯します。私が大切にしているのは、一頭ごとの口の状態を正確に見極め、その子にとって最善の選択肢を選ぶことです。
High-quality dental treatment rests on safe general anesthesia. I hold certification as a veterinary anesthesia technician (Japanese Society of Veterinary Anesthesia and Surgery), and I provide thorough pain care not only during the procedure but before and after it as well.
質の高い歯科治療は、安全な全身麻酔の上に成り立ちます。私は日本獣医麻酔外科学会の動物麻酔基礎技能認定医を取得しており、施術中だけでなく、施術前後の痛みのケアまで徹底して行っています。
For example, senior animals or those with heart or respiratory conditions are often told that anesthesia is "no longer possible because of their age." But rather than focusing on age as a number, I carefully evaluate the animal's current whole-body status — respiration, circulation, and metabolism — beforehand. By selecting the right analgesics, preparing vasopressors, ensuring sufficient oxygenation, monitoring blood pressure during recovery, and planning to complete the procedure efficiently in a short time, I raise the level of safety.
たとえば高齢の子や心臓・呼吸器に持病がある子では、「もう歳だから麻酔は無理」と諦められてしまうことが少なくありません。しかし私は、年齢という数字ではなく、呼吸・循環・代謝といった"今の全身状態"を事前にしっかり評価します。鎮痛薬の選択、昇圧剤の準備、十分な酸素化、覚醒時の血圧モニタリングを徹底し、処置を短時間で効率よく終えられるよう計画を立てることで、安全性を高めています。
Many dental problems progress where they cannot be seen — beneath the gums and at the roots of the teeth. A face that repeatedly swells or bleeds may in fact be caused by a tooth-root abscess in a back tooth. In my experience, such cases are by no means rare.
歯のトラブルの多くは、歯ぐきの下や歯の根といった目に見えない部分で進行します。顔の腫れや出血を繰り返す原因が、実は奥歯の歯根膿瘍だった——私の経験上、そうしたケースは決して珍しくありません。
I perform dental X-ray examinations under general anesthesia to accurately identify lesions invisible to the naked eye. Once I have determined the cause, when extraction is necessary I carefully close the extraction site using a gingival flap, while keeping teeth that can be preserved. This treatment selection based on diagnosis is exactly what helps prevent recurrence and protect quality of life (QOL).
私は全身麻酔下での歯科レントゲン検査を行い、肉眼では分からない病変を正確に把握します。原因を見極めたうえで、抜歯が必要な場合は歯肉フラップを用いて抜歯窩を丁寧に閉鎖し、温存できる歯は残す。この"診断に基づいた治療選択"こそが、再発を防ぎ、QOL（生活の質）を守ることにつながると考えています。
Something I tell owners again and again is that dental treatment truly begins once the teeth are clean. Drawing on joint research with university institutions, I propose dental care tailored to each animal's individual oral environment and provide comprehensive aftercare.
私が繰り返しお伝えしているのは、歯科治療は歯が綺麗になってからが本当のスタートだということです。私は大学の研究機関との共同研究をもとに、それぞれの口内環境に合ったデンタルケアを提案し、充実したアフターケアを行っています。
